1996 960 check engine light on - new catalytic converter ?

My son just received a diagnosis of failed catalytic converter when he took his 960 in after the CEL came on. Estimate is $3200 - which is something of a shock. The car has 120K miles on it and is otherwise in pretty good shape.

Is there a sensor associated with the cat converter that could cause this ?
