To start with, I filed down the shafts so I could separate the handles from the outer trim cups [if you will]. Is there any need to reattatch the square washers that hold that assembly together? Then, what holds the whole setup in position in the door? There is a cotter pin of some sort that goes through the shaft behind the cup in the door panel, but apparently outside of the latch assembly. The cups on the doors are so crude that I don't think the cotter pins are meant to bear against them, so what does hold everything in the right relative position?
