cold start wet weather blues 200 1989

hi

the car has been flawless until these last 2 months.
i noticed when it is raining or wet outside and the car has been sitting over night. (once it gets going and warmed up it is usually good for the rest of the day) but on start ups in the morning, it really stumbled, or hesitates. sometimes if i roll out of the driveway it will stall at the first stop sign.

until one morning my neighbor who is a heavy equipment mechanic came outside when i was having trouble starting the car. (it normally started, but got progressively worse until that morning it wouldn't start) he had his wife fetch a hair dryer and he said he had an old ford that used to be the same when it was wet outside. he warmed up the ignition coil and it started perfectly.

Next wet weather day it did the same, so i pulled out the hair dryer and warmed the coil and it started no problem. so i thought why not get a new ignition coil and save those wet morning hassles. So in goes the 90 dollar Bosch brand new coil. next wet weather day no problem starts and runs fine. Now second wet weather day with new coil and it's back to it's usual tricks, stumbling and stalling at stop signs even when the engine is warmed up a little bit.

today i noticed it wouldn't stumble in idle after the engine caught and fired up, but would hesitate and bounce and run rough once i put it into gear and added a load onto the demand of the engine.

I have been meaning to clean the throttle body and have a new gasket ready to do that job. and i haven't done my spring tune up, which is basically an oil change and new plugs and air filter.

any ideas ? i hate to throw parts at this car. and the hair dryer trick seemed to diagnose the ignition coil just fine .. until today.
