Odometer works sporadically 200 1993

Hi,
I'm having problems with my odometer. I had it apart 8 months ago using the following tutorial http://www.hyperocity.com/volvo240/volvoodometer.htm and found that the gear was fine, not missing a tooth, but I did remove a hair.
I tightened it up as tight as I could, put it back and it starting working.

But in the few months it has worked only sporadically. I can't see a pattern, it seems to start and stop randomly. However, I find that if it's working and I turn the car off it won't work when I turn it the car on again. Sometimes a whack will get it clicking again but only sometimes.

I'm guessing that the gear may be loose? It would be great to fix it so it would work reliably. Anyone have any ideas or similar experience with this.
