Climate Control - erratic fan speed & flashing light. 700

Hi All,

I have a problem with the Auto Climate Control in my 1990 740. I have looked at the FAQ's but no luck yet.

Occasionally the whole system works fine, heating, cooling and air directed to the right vents but on most occasions one of two things happen:

i) The air conditioning light flashes and the fan does not work. (heating works and air vents still works though)

OR ii) the system works, heating, cooling and vents are OK but the fan speed works OK on full (setting 5) but settings 1 and 2 are OK, but settings 3 and 4 do not change the fan speed.

Does this sound like the fan speed control box is on the way out?

Or would it be the main Auto Climate Control unit mounted in the dash?

(mine is the one that has the heatsink on the back and contains 2 relays and lots of small resistors and has 2 connectors).

Thanks for your help !
