Cleaning Air Filters

I was just posting elsewhere about a separate problem, but I recalled a thought. I recently replaced my dry element air filter on my '87 740. After I pitched it out, I started to wonder if there might be an effective way to clean a filter and thereby get a couple more runs out of it. It would save about $12 bucks that I could use to purchase a 12 pack or whatever.

I don't have time to seach the facs posted here, so if you know of one just tell me to search the facs and I will do so.

My thought would be to simply soak the filter in some water with either dish or laundry detergent and then back flush the filter with some warm water.

Any thoughts? Anyone ever try this?
