Tricks for removing U-joint bolts on driveshaft near tranny/tailshaft? 200

1989 245. I'm having a doozy of a time getting a good hold on the nut and bolt heads on the drive shaft; section where it mates with the transmission and tailshaft.

My open end wrenches don't slide down all the way, the closed end won't fit over and my socket set pieces are too bulky to slide down on either the nut or bolt head. An adjustable crescent is beginning to slip/strip the nut, as it won't slide fully over it either. Basically, the tailshaft housing is partially in the way on one side and parts of the u-joint itself are in the way of access.

Just looking at pictures of Art B's early 80's U-joint assembly, and I see it has plenty of clearance. Seems like the late 80's (like my 89), are a different assembly. Way less room to work.

This seems like a no brainer...anyone using a trick or special tool out there for this duty? The only thing I can think of is to go look for some really low-profile, or "thin-walled" sockets.
