1990 245 Starter / Solenoid Noise 200

It seems my starter/solenoid is about to go out. There is a strange run on sound while the car is cranking. It does not sound like the starter gear hitting the flywheel. It is much more less abrasive. It sounds like the solenoid is getting stuck going in & out. Is there a way to diagnose for sure? Is there a way to replace the solenoid without the starter? Is that wise? Any and all help as always is appreciated.
