760 GLT engine mounts learnings 700 1990

I'm sharing this should anyone else owning a 1990 760 GLT (4cylinder) plan on changing out their engine mounts.

There doesn't appear to be much written that describes this procedure for a 760 turbo. Some information confused me with other 700 models. I certainly am no expert on the differences.

Nonetheless, the engine mounts had to be replaced. My intent was to do this job and get it back on the road and then plan the next projects of timing belt, water pump, brakes, etc. Suspension including nivomats were done last year. I already had the mounts on hand including the tranny mount, but these remarks only include the engine.

As I surveyed the best plan of attack and began my first try at 760 mounts, I realized that access was real tight. Before I got very far along, I took a step back and said that for me, the easiest approach would be to remove the alternator and a/c compressor on the left side and power steering pump on the right. The alternator was taken out and the other two pushed aside for better mount access. The light bulb had come on. Bushings were worn, so why not replace with IPD poly. Had to do the timing belt, drive belts, and water pump anyway so why wait. Get'm while the accessories were off. I used a 4x4 with a hole drilled through to fit a threaded eye-bolt for over-engine support, then a floor jack to get the engine up off the old mounts. I jacked from under the most forward part of the tranny. I removed the old mounts still attached to their bottom brackets, leaving the upper brackets fixed to the engine block. It was sooooo easy to remove and soooo easy to install the new mounts with the bottom brackets attached. I did loosen the left side upper bracket to get some wiggle room to install the left side mount and bottom bracket.

The mounts are on and I'm waiting for bushings and the other parts to arrive. The hand tools that worked best for me were 15mm 6pt socket, 13mm 6pt socket and gearwrench, 12mm 6pt socket and gear wrench, universal, several extensions, etc. The rest of my work should be much like those 240's I've done in the past on B230F's. Unless there is hidden drama awaiting me.

For the love of Volvos.
Mike
