Car be Dead ... don't know why!!! 700 1985

1985 740 GLE (non turbo)

Car was running fine until last night when it just died. After working on it on the side of the road, I ended up having to tow it home. I thought it might be the fuel relay, because I opened it up and touched the contacts but the fuel pump wasn't running upon the keyturn. Replaced it and found a fuse was blown (#1) and replaced it. Car will now turn over.

The problem is that the car doesn't seem to want to hold a charge. I can jump the car and it will start, but when I remove the jumper cables, the engine dies. I looked here and started going through some of the diagnosis and started looking at the voltage regulator. As I was studying the regulator, I noticed that the connector that connects to the regulator is GONE! The wires and its connector have simply vanished. Are they supposed to be there?

When the car died, the instrument panel "idiot lights" went out. Nothing came on except the oil and parking brake light. Everything else was dead.

Could use some help on this one!?!?!?!?

Note: Go easy, too. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to alternators and car wiring. So make the explanations simple, please!
