Fuel Gauge-Could hitting top of dash break it? 200 1992

Hi. My temperature gauge tends to read hot, and smacking the top of the dash gets the needle to return away from the red. Although I KNOW this is diagnostic for an issue with the compenstion board, I will still sometimes smack the dash to reassure myself that the engine really is NOT overheating. My fuel gauge just stopped working, and I am wondering if, instead of this being a failing of the sending unit, it could in fact be damage done/something loosened behind the dash, the temperature gauge and fuel gauge being close neighbors. Any thoughts? -- 1992 240 wagon 123,000 orig. miles
