940 Wagon tailgate won't latch fully 900 1993

It used to work fine but now the tailgate won't latch that final click to hold fully closed. Even if locked, it will open an inch before catching. With the door open, I can trigger that final click but it doesn't do it while shutting, no matter how hard. It seems like the problem started when I used the key to open the back instead of the central locks.

If it matters, the rear glass was just replaced and there are little pieces rattling around inside.
