I put in a new aftermarket tank pump and sender from FCP yesterday. Here are a few notes that might be useful for someone:
1) I spent a long time carefully working the old fuel hoses off (I didn't have a replacement for the big line to the main pump). Finally, both rusty pipes in the sender top snapped. If I were doing it over, I'd just take a bolt cutter to the metal lines to start. It was easy to wiggle the broken ends out of the hoses. Hoses were fine, but both clamps were shot.
2) The IPD "bung nut" tool worked as advertised. It took a lot of penetrating fluid and force to start the retainer moving.
3) The tank pump was wired backwards as shown at http://cleanflametrap.com/transferPump.htm (Thanks, Art!)
4) The original molded hose looked great even after 300k+ miles. I re-used it.
5) A new wrinkle: the wires were reversed in the plastic connector topside so that the sender wire went to the pump and vice versa. I'm glad I figured this out before pulling the sender assembly out again.
