To make a long story short, my car broke the auxillary belt so I had it towed to the dealer and asked them to do all three front belts. They took two days and then informed me that I have a blown head gasket. They said the symptoms were: coolant coming out of the expansion tank when opened; and a smog test! Smog test!? They explained that they put a rag around the open coolant tank to seal and then test the vapors in the coolant tank. The test reported hydrocarbons and, according to them, proved a blown head gasket. I have no idea why they started talking about blown head gasket very soon after I brought it in for belts.
I drove it to my Indie for an second opinion, and a second estimate on repairing. And he cannot find any symptoms of a blown head gasket: no oil or sheen in the coolant tank; no coolant indicators in the engine oil (e.g. emulsion).
So my plan is to drive it and see what happens. I dislike the dealer but still would like to think they didn't intentionally misdiagnose a blown head gasket. They were very insistent they were correct.
