Odometer/trip meter doesn't work, speedo does 200 1989

After a recent fill up I reset the trip odometer. It went 72.x miles, then both odometers quit working, speedometer works & is accurate. i'm assuming that the gears are hung up. Anyone encounter this before? I did a forum search, and came up blank.
