91 745ti AC blower fades out when accelerating 700

I recently added a can of R-134 to our 1991 745ti with converted AC system. Pressure is ~40PSI while running. Cooling works very nicely at idle, but when you step on the gas, the blower motor fades away and there is no air flow from dash vents at all? As soon as car is moving and I let off the gas, the blower fan starts up and very cold air is delivered in cabin.
This has me stumped. The compressor is working fine, getting lots of cold air, the fan just doesn't blow when pressing on the gas.
