Brakes gone then come back..? 700

I am driving along. Very hot day 101F. Been driving for three hours. Go to put on brakes and they basically were not there. pedal went all the way down. There was a slight pumping sound. OK. Not good. I use the safety hand brake for a while. Stop the car. Brake fluid is full. Start car again. Still no brakes. Then after about 5 minutes of driving, limping home using the safety brake, the pedal brakes come back. They seem fine..?

What do you think?

I have had no problems with them. They were bled and all pads changed a year back.

Manual 5 speed 740 1990.
