double-DIN radio in a 1994 960 ? 900 1994

I have a 1994 960 sedan that came stock with a am/fm/cassette head unit. The head is a double-size, what would appear to be a double-DIN. I replaced it a few years ago with a single-DIN Alpine head. The new one came with a steel cage that slid in perfectly. I used a filler box below that.

Now I want to replace it with a double-DIN head. Looking at the dash, there is a plastic ridge running from the front and rear of the dash inside where the head sits. This seems to divide the opening from a double-DIN to what may really be a pair of single-DIN openings. The stock radio had a groove that this ridge slid along.

I'm concerned that a double-DIN cage and head won't go in because of that ridge (unless I ground it down - a messy proposition).

Has anyone had experience with getting a double-DIN head in one of those openings ? I've seen some people had success with later model 960's, but the opening may have changed since the 1994.
