inexperienced owner needs basic trouble shooting advice on no start 200

Brickboard,

I have owned 240s for many years but have fortunately not had to diagnose many no-start conditions.

Now I have an 89 240 that sometimes will not start when it is hot.

I know enought to first determine if it is spark or fuel but am not sure exactly how to do it. For one thing, it only has the problem some times so when I am lucky enough to have it not start I want to be ready.

First to determine if it is a fuel issue, I would like to spray some starting fluid into it. On a carburated model, I would just take off the air cleaner and shoot it in there while a helper cranks the engine. Is there a similar place to shoot it into my 240's engine?

Next to determine if it is weak spark I think I know what to do. I am planning on carrying a spark plug wrench to unscrew a plug, stick it back into the plug wire and ground it to check for a blue spark while a helper cranks the engine. Sound OK?

I should also mention that I have another 240 that is running so swapping parts is no problem. In fact, I have already swapped the coil and it still fails so I can rule that out.

Am I on the right track? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
