Overdrive not engaging 200 1993

I have a 1993 Volvo 240 which has started having an intermittent problem that's now turned near permanent. The overdrive now will not engage (arrow is lit up all the time) and depressing the button on the shift lever will not engage.

For awhile it would only have this issue when sitting parked on a 90 degree plus day. After driving and cooling the overdrive would then engage.

I read on a post that I could bypass the relay? Any more info on this would be appreciated.
