I was getting an awful grinding noise while trying to start my 58 444. The person I bought it from had replaced the soleniod before selling it, so that is a new part. I pulled the starter out and saw that the pinion gear is worn away on the upper portion. It needs to be replaced. Are there some instructions somewhere on getting this starter apart so that I can replace this gear? Also, how does the solenoid connect to the lever that pushes out the pinion gear? I have a reprint of the old clymer manual but it just says "remove starter" and goes into no details about taking it all apart. I also need to determine if the new solenoid isn't pushing out the pinion enough or if the damage was caused from the old one that was replaced. The flywheel teeth seem to be ok, thank God.
