My A/C quit working on the hottest day this summer in Houston. the heat index was around 110. I noticed my volt meter was showing low voltage when the a/c starting blowing warm. I turned the a/c off and the voltage jumped back up to normal. I thought that was strange so I turned the a/c back on. The voltage again dropped lower than I had ever seen except when the brushes went out and the alternator was dead. It was above 12 but not in the normal range. I turned the a/c back off until I could get home and check it out. I checked it when I got home and I found that if I turn the a/c on, the clutch is not fully engaging. It is trying to engage. I tried turning the compressor by hand and it seems almost too free. I never tried to turn the compressor by hand so I don't know what normal feels like. I tried connecting the a/c compressor direct to the battery but still no full engagment of the clutch. I noticed the jumper wire gets hot when I try connecting direct to the battery. I searched here and found that the clucth resistance should be around 3.5 ohms. mine is .5 ohms. I think I have a shorted clutch winding. Has anyone ever replaced theirs. I couldn't find information in the archives about this. A new clutch is 175. and a new compressor with clutch is 300. Hmmmm?
