armrest re-cover question 140-160

I picked up an armrest that has a slide out drink holder in front (from a 240). I need to have it recovered to match my interior. My problem is where the drink holder mechanism attaches to the vinyl cover. I can't see how to remove the cover without cutting or ripping it away from the holder. Is it heat welded together? Then there's the question of how to attach the new cover. Does anyone have any experience re-covering these things? I can furnish a picture if necessary.
