fuel sender replaced, now fuel gauge over the top 200 1985

'85 244

a few weeks ago my fuel gauge began to read about 1/4 tank when full
but as i used the fuel and got the actual amount below that it began to accurately read the correct amount
so it was only showing properly anything below 1/4 tank, any amount over that and it just stopped at 1/4 mark on gauge

i replaced the in-tank sending unit with a new model from FCP groton (the $110 one)

NOW the gauge goes way over any reading i have ever seen
i pulled and checked my installation to ensure the float was not stuck on something
the wires on the in-tank pump look fine and are not crossed

where should i look?

BTW i may not be able to fix this before i need to make a 150 mile drive, will this cause any permanent damage?
