My son's 1995 944T had the Engine Check light come on. The only code was on the EZK check (socket 6), 1-4-4. This code does not show up in the Green Book for LH by the RPM sensor. It had missing rubber jacket on the bottom three inches and the foil shield was unwinding. The car fan fine, but I expect RPM sensor failure was eminent.

The code would clear, but would come in again on starting with the bad RPM sensor. Replacing the RPM sensor, and the code did not come back once cleared.
