240 tranny issues 200 1988

Car is a 1988 245 w/ approx 240K. Car has severely delayed upshift from 1 when in D. Makes the 1-2 shift fine when in 2. Local indie trans guy (not Aamco) says it appears that it is actually skipping 2 when in D and going directly from 1 to 3. Any of you familiar with the scary innards of the AW have any ideas on what could be going on? The guy admits he is at a loss as to what could cause this.

Will pursue getting an AW-71L from one of the local junkyards if we end up having to replace.
