slave cylinder bleeding question 700 1988

I just replaced the slave cylinder on my 88 740 and can't get it bled. No amount of pumping the clutch pedal produces any resistance. I tried bleeding with vacuum at the slave cylinder with a mighty vac, I tried reverse bleeding with pressure with a tube to the left front brake caliper, and plain old gravity. I know the slave cyl was leaking thus the replacement, but I'm now wondering if the master cyl is bad too. How would I know? There are no apparent leaks at the master cylinder. All ideas welcome.
