Detent Collar Dislocation 200

I have to valet park my 1988 240 wagon and the valet drivers are constantly surprising me with a new thing that is broken on my car since I last drove it myself. This time it's the detent collar for putting the manual transmission into reverse. The shifter knob had been missing (meaning to fix it) but the collar was in place, so the car functioned fine. Somehow, a driver managed to pry the detent collar loose while (presumably) trying to get it into reverse. The collar appears not to be damaged but I can't figure out how to get it situated properly so that it once again engages reverse. Has this ever happened to anyone out there? Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
John
