'87 240 stalls when I put my foot on the gas... any idea what's wrong? 200 1987

So I was on the freeway... I had to accelerate to make a lane change... I put my foot on the gas a little harder and my car sped up briefly before beginning to decelerate (even though my foot was still down on the pedal a little harder)... Fortunately, I made it to the offramp... I stopped at the red light... The light turned green and I put my foot on the gas but my car stalled... I started it up, put my foot on the gas and it stalled again.... I gave up, put it in neutral and pushed it to the shoulder. Any idea what the problem is?
