I doubt this will help anyone, as surely I'm the first and only.

Before inserting new front pads, after dressing the pad ways, I proceeded to hose down a caliper with brake cleaner. First thing I noticed was the cleaner was not dripping down on the cardboard below. Next thing, I realized the tall can contained 3m rubberized undercoating.
