142 Gas Gauge 140-160

All, I found a strange issue with the fuel gauge on my 71 142. It was working fine (although it read E at 8 gal). The other day, with 133 miles on the tank, it shot up to F, but the temp gauge was fine. When I parked, on a whim, I took off the fuel filler cap, let out a huge hiss of pressure. When I restarted the car, the gas gauge was where it should be -- around the middle.

What's up with this? Anything I can rectify, or should I just chalk it down to the vagaries of a 40-year-old car?

Thanks.
