wiper stop position 200 1992

Can someone explain how the wiper arm knows where to stop when you turn the wipers off ?
My rear wiper on a 1992 245 wagon keeps stopping in a different spot each time I turn it off. I had pulled the arm away from the window because it had overshot the glass. And I cycled the motor and watched it stop in different spots each time.
This is not a new problem. The wiper has not worked since I got the car.
Today I pulled the covers to find NO bolts holding down the motor!
But luckily they were shaking a round in the gate still.
bolted the motor down in good volvo fashion and happily went to check my work . No joy. the motor keeps stopping in different spots.
Does that sound right. ? Anyone have a suggestion ?
