Faded brake lights 200 1993

My 1993 volvo 240 failed inspection today. They said that my brake lights
were to faded, and appear clear instead of red. Apparently Texas heat and rain
washed the color away. I know I can get new brake light assembly. This is expensive.
Is there a way to color these lights? If yes, how? It is interesting that original lights
were also painted. Color is only on outside. This is kind of cheap coming from Volvo…
