Fuel Gauge and brake warning lamp faults. Please help! 140-160 1971

Hi.. has anyone got any experience of the following problem.. If I fill up my 144 and flick the ignition the fuel gauge tries to register a few times and the needle goes up to about half before falling to far left (ie not registering any reading)So i thought this meant the sender was faulty. I haven't checked this yet because somebody told me that they thought it the gauge faulty not the sender.. anyone got any ideas on where I should start? It may be unrelated but I think certainly would indicate a fault on the back of the instrument cluster, and that is the brake warning lamp is permenantly on. Is this lamp meant to signify that the handbrake is on or that there is a fault in the braking circuit? or both? Any help from someone who has experienced this would be great.. cheers Joe
