Mysterious and intermittent engine "dying' on 240. 200

I drive a 1990 240 automatic transmission with 170,000 careful miles. I recently, this Summer, cleaned the throttle body, falme trap and AMM. I closed off the Air Heater Box and removed the thermostat. I don't have any codes to submit, but for the past three months or so, the car will start fine and run usually completing the trip of short or long distance, atlhough I have not gone on anything over 100 miles yet this year. Two days ago, I was driving on an Interstate Highway at about 55 mph when the engine "took a gasp" and died. I left the key on (I was in the center lane)and after about 15 seconds of coasting, the engine re-ignited and I was off for the rest of the day of perfect driving except that the check-engine light was on. Yesterday, I left home and at the second traffic signal, the engine just died. I immediately turned the key and it started and ran fine. About 15 minutes later, in traffic, it died at a traffic signal and it toook three tries, wtih 15 seconds between tries, before it restarted and ran the rest of the day perfectly with many errands and stop-starts. I have not replaced fuel filter for at lest two years and I don't know about fuel pressure regulators. I will appreciate your help. Thanks.

PS Thanks Art, for advice and all my salesmen are still laughing about the Kayak. I did not have to hope for your humor to be there........Inuit would be.
