Huge drop in fuel economy,1996 960 sedan 900 1996

Hello all, I have a problem with this car using more fuel than previous months. The symptom has been at the same time that I get a bit of a backfire when the engine has been started for the first time in the morning. It once backfired enough to blow the idle air hose off the intake manifold. I was checking the vacuum line from the purge valve and it seemed to be wet with fuel. Is it possible for the purge valve to be sucking fuel straight from the gas tank and depositing it into the intake manifold? Any helpful advice needed. Thanks, Pauli
