Bad head gasket can cause coolant in transmission? 700

According to this thread ( http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1452101/940/960/980/V90/S90/1993_940_transmission_problems.html ), rjk2 said that a busted head gasket caused coolant to leak into the transmission. Is that possible? It could explain my saga of putting in a new radiator and flushing 4 gallons of ATF and the ATF in the flush hose is still brown/purpleish, but I don't understand where the path is from coolant system to transmission other than the radiator.
