Rear Wiper Motor 700 1991

I'm having an issue with my rear wiper. I've tried 2 different motors and both are exhibiting the same behavior.

I've got the motor installed and the linkage connected. I've tried positioning the wiper different ways, but the motor always rotates in only one direction.

According to the FAQ, I am supposed to position the short part of the linkage so it is in line with and underneath the long part of the linkage. My linkage is not long enough for this. It is long enough to hit either 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock on the motor. I've heard that the motors are supposed to switch direction, but I don't know how they know when to switch or why mine aren't doing so.

If I set my linkage to rest at either 9 o'clock or 6 o'clock, it will rotate to 12 o'clock. It only rotates clockwise (looking from inside the car back). Is this the intended behavior? Why does the FAQ say to line up the linkage in an impossible way?

Thank you.
