brake bleeding question 200 1992

I recall some folks used a piece of wood or something during the brake bleeding process to prevent the master cylinder from scoring seals. Was it as simple as a piece of 2x4 behind the brake pedal?

I've searched and I can't find anything which is surprising as I recall seeing this technique dozens of times over the years. Is there a limit on how far back searches will look?
