RWD vs. FWD question? 700 1990

I presently have a 1990 740 turbo brick and am considering upgrading to a 2000 front wheel drive model however am wondering why did volvo change to front wheel drive? Is this a better traction or is it cheaper for the manufacturer? Just can't fathom why the change after so many years?
