Tailgate Air 200 1988

The retainer on the left side of the license plate light on my wagon has rusted and fallen out. Not a complicated replacement. I had the car running the other night, in park, and was raising the tailgate to put groceries in when I noticed a rush of air coming from the hole where the light had been. I could feel the air moving rapidly past my fingers. I don't know why there would be air circulating through the tailgate, can anyone tell me what this is from? Thanks! Vio el Vio!
