Hello all.
My car seems to have developed a pretty serious problem in the last few days. After a long holiday weekend I needed to take my 89 745 out for a spin yesterday but the engine wouldn't turn when I turned the key. Ok, I thought to myself, it's probably the shifter start lockout thing, so I shifted out of park, ran through the gears, back into park and started fine. I didn't have another problem that day and I thought that was the end of it. Probably related to what happened the following day.
Today on my way home from work the car stalled while driving. I shifted to neutral, restarted, it ran for 2-3 seconds and stalled again. I restarted and it was fine the rest of the way home. I heard what sounded like a relay clicking off/on rapidly while this was occurring. I took the car out for another drive tonight to see if I could repeat it and while it never stalled, I did experience several hiccups, it seemed to be tied to large bumps/potholes on the road, as if something is being jarred loose by the impact. I'm going to remove, inspect and reinstall all fuses and relays after I finish this message.
Until now this car has been utterly reliable and I've kept up on all maintenance needed. The car has 280k mi and ran like a top until yesterday. I didn't find anything helpful in my Haynes manual, nor could I come up with good results on the internet. Any thoughts? Again, I'd think relay because of what I heard, although perhaps there is an electrical or wiring problem elsewhere causing the relay to flip out. Is there a master relay somewhere in the cabin that may be on its last legs? If anyone has any thoughts I'd greatly appreciate it. This is my only car and I'm a little desperate!
Thanks everyone!
