Steering shaft - safety issue? 444-544

Hi all -

Quick question on the steering shaft used in the PV series cars: can anyone confirm (via primary source material) that the engineers at Volvo designed the cars such that the steering shaft is designed to pivot upward in the event of a front end crash?

I've never heard of anyone being impaled by the steering shaft, and I'd think that if that were happening back in the day that Volvo would have made changes to the design... but at the same time, if this 'pivot' action isn't part of the plan I'll want to make some changes before putting my wife behind the wheel of our newly acquired 445. Her well being and safety are far more important to my than my own.

Yes, I know: if safety is paramount, there are other [perhaps better] vehicle choices. I'm looking to find a balance between relative safety and her/our love for the PV. We're happy to assume some level of risk in order to enjoy what we enjoy, but we'd like to remove getting skewered from the equation.

Second question: have any of us here on the board converted a PV to use a collapsible steering setup as fitted to either the 1800 or later 122 models?

Thanks,

Cameron
