Overdrive down shifting. 200 1978

My 1978 244DL has an automatic transmission with the over drive button on the shifter. I bought this car as a project and have replaced the starter, alternator, battery, vac lines, air intake hoses, pre-heater hose, plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and both positive and negative battery cables. When I'm driving on the highway and I push the overdrive button the transmission down shifts. It's almost as if whoever installed it may have reversed the wires on it (transmission was replaced before I owned it). Since it's a solenoid it could function fine if wired backwards just would give you the opposite result that you were expecting. It just snowed down here in Atlanta so I'm waiting for it warm up before I inspect it but I wanted to know if anyone has experienced this or if my logic makes sense. I may be a glutton for punishment but my goal is to follow the green books wiring diagram from the k-jet website and rebuilt the entire electrical system from bumper to bumper with correctly colored wire. I started with the main battery cables and am working from the starter to the alternator and so on. I am waiting on 2 new voltage regulators before I keep going. Thanks in advance for the input.
