OK, we have a '93 940 in which the seats were trashed. Found a donor and got some nearly new replacement seats from a '91 740.
Our '93 had sensors attached to the seat belt retractor mechanism - I unplugged them when removing the seats. The '91 seats have no such sensor. I suspect that the SRS light on the instrument panel is the code telling me "no power/connection to seat retractor sensor."
So a few questions. First, will the airbag system function as designed even though this code is present? Second, is there a workaround solution - can I somehow remove the sensors from the old seats and hook them up to fill the electronic system's need to have this sensor present? It would be easy, for example, to simply clip off the cable between the sensor and the old retractor, clamp it, put it in place on the pillar, reconnect it on each side, reset the codes, and off we go. Not sure whether the older seats have the capability of mounting the retactor on the seat - on the 740, the retractor was mounted on the pillar. In our case, the 740 retractors work perfectly, and the old 940 retractors were sluggish - many times stopping short of full belt retraction.
Thanks for any information, folks.
And yes, I always disconnect the battery and wait a sufficient time before fiddling around the air bag sensor.
