Replace freeze plugs on 89 240? 200

Daughter driving my 89 240 in Los Angeles area. Says check engine light came on and steam under hood, leaking coolant. Had already replaced radiator hoses. Mechanic thinks freeze plugs need replacing. Difficult job? What should I expect to pay? Mechanic says tranny must come out.
