Steering Column Loose Between Steering Wheel & Pedals 900

A friend's 940 has developed excessive movement in the steering column.

The location of the problem is about 30cm/12" below the steering wheel,(under the dash) where the shaft goes from a larger circumference to a smaller circumference. The smaller shaft fits up inside the larger shaft.

When the steering wheel is turned there is considerable slack before the wheels move. The larger top shaft does not move in unison with the lower shaft.
