Uncommon Speedometer Problem? 200 1990

For a while now the speedometer has been a bit glitchy. Sometimes it would drop down to zero and fail to work for a couple seconds, minutes, sometimes longer. Sometimes it would just twitch a little bit and return to normal operation.

When it stops the odometer stops.

At first I thought it could be in the cluster or it could be the sensor itself.

But what points me to the cluster is that the only thing that affects the speedometer's action when it's being erratic is switching on the high beams. If the needle is doing nothing and sitting at zero you can flip the high beams and it twitches and jumps. Sometimes it will then start operating normally, sometimes not. It's all very random.

For many months it has gone without any problems, but lately it has been acting up and not working for long periods during drives.

When I get a break and the severe cold lets up a little I'm planning on taking a look at the board.

I thought this was odd and I haven't seen anyone else here on the BB with this problem. Anyone experienced this?
