1986 740 hard starts when very cold out 700

hey all,

now this is an issue thats been puzzling me mostly because it only happens when its extremely cold outside and i was reminded of it earlier today.

when first turning the key my 1986 740 gle acted like the engine was near seized(extremely slowwwww cranking) but fired and died immediately. second go it cranked over a bit faster died and the cycle continues. at about the 3rd or 4th try of holding the gas pedal to the floor and cranking, which by the way cranks normally now it fires up and sputters tries to stall but after about 2 mins of flooring the gas it gets out of its little fit and idles normally. i know theres something to do with the ECT but why the slow start? if engines cold and has been running the same day it starts right up 2 second turn. i know the batt is not drained because i have a swan terminal disconnect installed but i skipped 1 day of driving it.

any suggestions as to what to try? should i put in the engine heater i have?

thanks
