High-pitched whine at high speeds 200 1992

I can hear a high-pitched noise when on the freeway above 55 or so. Lately it's gotten a lot worse, appearing at lower speeds, and it's getting louder. Whether or not the throttle is engaged doesn't affect it. I wonder if this is something that needs to be addressed immediately.

I have no idea what it is, but it sounds like it's coming from the tranny. Of course that's just a guess. I ran a search and it seemed like it could be the driveshaft bearing, center carrier bearing (?), or maybe there's just something irreparably wrong with my transmission. The noise is kind of overwhelming so I can't pinpoint its location.

Just driving around town, nothing seems amiss...so far.
